V. Curriculum Development
Primary designer and coordinator for the Naropa University Community Art Studio (NCAS) project at Naropa University. The guiding vision behind this long-term project is to provide a safe space for various age groups, particularly adolescent members of the Boulder community, to gather and create art together. Equal access for our community members is stressed, particularly those people who are often marginalized and unlikely to have contact with the humanizing practice of engaging in creative, artistic behavior. However, by no means is this a restrictive environment. In essence it is a studio setting for a wide range of community members. Naropa University Art Therapy faculty/alumni and graduate students will manage the studio, organizing and running the many ways in which this space will be used. Respect for cultural, ethnic, gender, and spiritual diversity is a founding principal of the studio. Unity in diversity, the birthright to pursue creative expression, and the capacity of visual art to contain and communicate the full range of human experiences comprise the essence of our mission and focus at the NCAS.
Art Therapy Studio Observation. Developed a one credit hour, service learning based course that offers instruction on how to create and fund a studio, manage it, and network within the community.
Perspectives of Art Therapy, Naropa University. Developed a 2 credit hour course on art therapy for graduate students who are non-majors.
Reconfigured significant aspects of the graduate art therapy curriculum at The Naropa
University with a special focus on balancing clinical, studio art, and contemplative
Components.
Art Therapy: Perspectives on Theory, Practice, and Practical Applications. Developed a
seven-hour workshop in conjunction with continuing education for mental health professionals seeking continuing education credits, June l988 and l989, l996, 1997,
1998. BGSU.
Designed and taught a 4-day workshop for graduate level counseling majors along with
professional counselors practicing in the community. The workshop stressed historical
aspects of the field, therapeutic qualities of art materials, strategies to employ when
looking at and processing art work along with hands-on exploration of art therapy
based techniques. BGSU.
Designed and taught a 4-day workshop for the staff of the Juvenile Detention Center of
Northwest Ohio, Bowling Green, OH, June l995.
ARTT 43l Art Therapy Process, Studio Methods, and Techniques. This course resulted
after several semesters of teaching the ARTT 495 course listed below. The description of the course is as follows: Hands-on investigation of art therapy studio processes and
procedures with an emphasis on adaptations of projects for specific client populations.
Also to be covered in this course is the development of the student's own creative/visualizing process. BGSU.
ARTT 495 Art Therapy Process & Techniques. A course developed to help round out an existing curriculum deficit in the art therapy course sequence. The course focuses on the use of various art therapy techniques within a variety of clinical settings. Studio art
issues geared towards the development of artistic and clinical awarenesses are also
stressed throughout the course. BGSU.
Art Therapy 503 Techniques of Art Therapy. Designed and taught a course devoted to
experiential art therapy techniques that have direct relationship to the practice of art therapy with various client populations. Graduate Program in Art Therapy, Vermont College of Norwich University, Montpelier, Vermont, Summer l989.
